What’s involved during the test
The HGV driving test consists of several key components, including vehicle safety questions, an hour of practical road driving, and a follow-up session of vehicle safety questions.
Vehicle safety questions
At the start of your test, you will be asked a series of vehicle safety questions. These questions assess your understanding of the vehicle’s functions and safety features, ensuring you are well-prepared for any situation on the road.
Practical road driving
The practical road driving section is where you will truly showcase your skills. During this hour-long segment, the examiner will evaluate how you:
- Use the vehicle controls effectively
- Move away at an angle, uphill, and downhill
- Execute a controlled stop
- Use your mirrors appropriately
- Give signals in a timely manner
- Show awareness of other road users’ intentions
- Manage your progress and control your vehicle speed

Additionally, the test includes 10 minutes of independent driving, designed to assess your ability to make safe, independent decisions while on the road.
