The HGV driving test is divided into two essential components, 3a and 3b. These two parts ensure drivers are thoroughly prepared for both off-road manoeuvres and real-world driving. In order to qualify for the 3b test, candidate would need to have taken their 3a test which covers off-road exercises such as reversing and other vehicle-handling tasks. Before booking the 3b test, you must successfully pass the 3a portion. If you don’t pass the 3a, you won’t need to retake the entire exam, saving both time and costs.
What’s involved during the 3b test?
Th 3b test which includes one hour of practical road driving. During this test, the examiner will observe how you manage vehicle controls, deal with hazards, and drive safely in various conditions such as uphill and downhill scenarios. The 3b test also includes 10 minutes of independent driving, where you will be tested on your ability to make decisions without direction from the examiner. Additionally, you’ll need to answer vehicle safety questions from a list relevant to HGVs, buses, or coaches, depending on your vehicle

- Moving away at an angle, both uphill and downhill
- Performing a controlled stop
- Proper use of mirrors and signals
- Anticipating and reacting to other road users
- Managing vehicle speed and progress
