What is the Cat C 3b Test?
The Cat C 3b test is a crucial step for anyone aiming to drive rigid Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) over 7.5 tonnes professionally. This on-road driving test evaluates your ability to safely and confidently operate these larger vehicles in real-world driving conditions.
Key skills tested include:
- Vehicle Control: Demonstrating confident and smooth handling of all controls.
- Manoeuvring: Moving off safely, including uphill and downhill starts, and performing controlled stops.
- Mirror Use: Keeping aware of your surroundings and other road users.
- Signalling: Providing clear and timely communication on the road.
- Hazard Awareness: Anticipating and managing potential risks effectively.
- Speed and Progress Management: Maintaining safe and appropriate speeds for the conditions.
- Independent Driving: Completing a section of the test while making independent decisions.
- Safe Stopping: Identifying and pulling over to safe stopping points.
To pass, candidates need to avoid any serious or dangerous faults and can have no more than 12 minor faults.
